Our Vision
The Department is highly visible and respected statewide, nationally, and internationally for its generation of relevant and high quality economic information, stimulating
learning environment, and highly effective application of knowledge and thinking skills to improving the quality
of life and economic well-being of people in Mississippi and elsewhere.

Our Values
We believe in the dignity and intrinsic worth of the individual
working in a culture defined by a quest for knowledge, a search for understanding, and a commitment to service.
Specific values guiding members of the Department include: objectivity, integrity and the honest search for truth;
commitment to serving the public good; professionalism and excellence in all activities; economics as an
integrative discipline; and thus, the inherent importance of working with other disciplines; the application of our
academic disciplines in partnership with other disciplines to the solution of real problems; responsiveness to the
needs of the people of the state and nation; and individual responsibility, accountability, and freedom of
expression. We respect the unique gender, social, cultural, ethnic, physical and mental characteristics of every
individual; and the contributions those unique characteristics can make to our mission.

Our Mission
To provide people with lifelong learning and decision skills and
scholarship-based knowledge that improves their quality of life in a global society and that improves the
contributions of agriculture, agricultural-based industries, and natural resources to the improvement of economic
viability and well-being of the citizens of Mississippi, the nation, and the world.

Our Strategies
- Motivate, encourage and reward excellence in teaching, advising,
and the development of a stimulating learning environment for faculty, staff and students.
- Expand the scope of learning, research, and outreach to encompass the areas of skills and knowledge critical to assuring an adequate and safe supply of food and renewable raw materials, sustaining the natural resource base, successfully competing in a global economy, and improving the quality of life and economic opportunity for our citizens.
- Enhance the productivity and impact of research, scholarship, learning and outreach through innovative use of advanced technology.
- Enhance our appropriated resources by aggressively seeking and earning grants, contracts, and gifts consistent with our mission and goals.
- Increase the quality and usefulness of research by innovative and synergistic partnering with appropriate disciplines, individuals, and organizations.
- Enhance the productivity and impact of our research resources by focusing on areas of greatest economic need and opportunity and by stimulating and rewarding research excellence and usefulness.
