The MS Program
Our program stresses a thorough mastery of advanced economic theory, methods of quantitative analysis, and the applications of these methods to problems in the food and fiber system. The broad program of economic research conducted by the department affords a wide selection of areas from which the student may choose a specific research problem.
Students must successfully complete a minimum of 26 coursework hours and 6 thesis research hours. In addition, students must pass a comprehensive examination and successfully defend a thesis.
Coursework:
Each new student will begin required coursework in a fall semester.
First Fall Semester

- Econometric Analysis in Agricultural Economics
- Consumers, Producers, and Markets
First Spring Semester
- Research Seminar II
- Modeling for Agricultural Management
- Agricultural Production Economics
- Market Organization and Structure
Thesis Research:
Each student will have a major professor and an advisory committee to help in all aspects of the thesis research.
A wide variety of research topics are usually available. These include:
- Production
- Marketing
- Price analysis
- Policy analysis
- International trade
- Natural resources
- Environmental economics
- Farm management
- Aquacultural management
Research Assistantships:
Graduate research assistantships are often awarded to highly-qualified students. For consideration, send the assistantship application form directly to the department’s graduate coordinator by March 1.

Admissions:
Applicants must submit GRE scores and follow MSU’s application procedures. Application materials (including the application fee) must be sent to the Office of Graduate Studies at MSU. Online application is available.
